How to Cook Rice
Some people have trouble cooking rice to perfection. Perfect rice is light and fluffy, with the grains remaining separate and tender. Cooking perfect rice depends on the variety used and the amount of water you add. Always wash rice grains in plenty of running water and drain before cooking. Don’t soak it or your cooking time will change.
How to Cook Rice on the Stove Top
The absorption method is the best way to cook Basmati rice. Measure out the amount of rice you want. ½ cup per person is a generous serve. Wash and drain in a colander and put into a medium saucepan. Using the same measuring cup used for the rice, add one and a half times the amount of fresh water. Swill it around to even the grains across the base of the saucepan. Put the lid on and bring it to the boil. Don’t go away, because the moment it boils you need to reduce the heat to low. Check your clock. At 13 minutes remove from the heat. Don’t take the lid off, don’t stir it, just leave it to continue absorbing any remaining liquid. Allow to sit for a few minutes and it’ll be ready when you are!
How to Cook Rice in a Rice Cooker
A rice cooker uses the absorption method too. The quantities and the method remain the same as for the stove top method. The same rules apply also! Don’t take the lid off, don’t stir it and do allow it to sit for a few minutes after the timer pings before serving.
